In Paris, art isn’t confined to galleries — it spills into the streets, the architecture, and even the homes themselves. The city’s façades are canvases of history, and its interiors often echo the same creative spirit that defines its museums. From Haussmannian apartments with ornate moldings to sleek contemporary lofts overlooking the Seine, every property in Paris carries a touch of artistry — a balance of beauty, craftsmanship, and soul.
That spirit was on full display last week. With Art Basel Paris at its center, Paris Art Week turned the entire city into a living gallery — full of energy, conversation, and verve. Collectors, artists, and tastemakers from across the world gathered, affirming what many already know: Paris is not only a timeless city — it’s an ascendant one.
At 56Paris, we’re continually enamored by how the city rises to the occasion of moments like this. From the luminous glass vaults of the Grand Palais, the spectacular Beaux-Arts venue for Art Basel Paris, to the bustling galleries of the Marais and Saint-Germain, the whole city seemed dressed in its best finery.
Dealers came hoping to shed some of the recent gloom that has hung over the global art market — and, judging by the results, Paris delivered.
A City in Its Finest Finery
This year’s “Avant Première,” an ultra-exclusive pre-preview event described by The New York Times as “so exclusive that breaking into the Louvre might be easier,” drew some of the world’s most important collectors. Within just hours, major works by Gerhard Richter, George Condo, and Ruth Asawa changed hands for tens of millions — a vivid sign of the confidence and enthusiasm surrounding Paris’s art scene.
“The fair was four hours old, and it became our best-ever fair in Paris,” the New York-based mega-gallerist David Zwirner told The New York Times, having sold more than $25 million worth of artworks during the Avant Première.
What’s remarkable is how this Paris edition now outshines its siblings in Basel, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong. Those fairs remain important, but it’s Paris that currently draws the most passionate crowd — an audience as enthralled by the art as by the setting itself. After all, where else can collectors leave a multimillion-euro transaction and walk directly into a bistro where Picasso once dined?
The New Capital of Art — and of Life
Art Basel’s success underscores what many have long observed: Paris is reclaiming its place as the cultural and financial capital of Europe. With Brexit diminishing London’s preeminence, the balance of art, culture, and capital has shifted toward the French capital. Le Monde recently noted that Paris has reached “unprecedented levels of accumulated wealth” (with companies like Hermès and LVMH) and the city’s growing internationalism can be felt at every vernissage, dinner party, and new gallery opening.
Meanwhile, new institutions like the Fondation Cartier’s magnificent new space opposite the Louvre, and blockbuster exhibitions at the Fondation Louis Vuitton and the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, have made Paris an unmissable stop for the global art world.
Beyond Art Basel itself, Design Miami Paris, held in a gorgeous Left Bank mansion once lived in by Karl Lagerfeld, and Asia Now, a fair devoted to Asian art, added to the week’s energy.
Regular readers of our Blog might remember our feature on Design Miami Paris’s debut edition at the Hôtel de Maisons — you can revisit it here. This year’s event was equally inspiring, and we were fortunate to attend once again. Keep your eyes peeled for our upcoming article on the 2025 edition, where we’ll share highlights from this year’s remarkable convergence of art, design, and Parisian elegance.
The crosscurrents were everywhere — established artists, young gallerists such as Alina Pinsky, and a new generation of collectors mixing across neighborhoods and disciplines. You could see Richter at the Fondation Louis Vuitton and again at various booths across the fair — a rich, tangible crossover between the institutional and the commercial.
Living at the Heart of It All
For those who call Paris home — particularly in its central arrondissements — this cultural renaissance is not something to observe from afar, but to live and breathe every day. Imagine stepping out your door to discover a new gallery opening, a pop-up installation, or a café filled with the same collectors and curators who shape the art world — and sometimes, even buying for museums.
Just as a collector carefully curates a gallery, we help our clients find spaces that inspire — properties that are both investments and expressions of taste. We also believe that art is what completes a Parisian home. A well-chosen painting or sculpture doesn’t just decorate a wall; it transforms a space, bringing warmth, personality, and depth.
So whether you’re drawn to the bold lines of modern abstraction or the quiet grace of classic portraiture, consider how art can elevate your Paris property — turning a beautiful home into a truly extraordinary one.
